Some Things That Cause Prayers Not To Be Answered

I’m often asked why someone’s prayer was not answered. Here are some things to ponder:

  1. Unbelief. The Hebrew writer says in chapter 11:6 “He that come to God must believe that he is…” We cannot call on God to do anything for us, when we don’t believe or have faith in Him. James 1:6-7 says, Let not that man (that wavereth in his trust) think that he will receive anything of the Lord.
  2. Not Asking In Jesus’ Name. Jesus said, “If you ask anything in my name, I will do it” John 14:14. When we close our prayer with anything other than in Jesus name, we have missed the mark. It’s like trying to cash a check with the owner of the bank accounts’ name signed on it.
  3. Unforgiving Spirit. There is no use praying if we are not able to forgive one another as Christ forgave us. Col. 3:13.
  4. Secret Sin. David says in Psalms 66:18 “If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me.” When we call on the Lord, there should be nothing between God and us. He knows our heart, so we should seek to have a clean heart when we approach God.
  5. Selfishness. James 4:3 says “Ye ask and receive not because you ask amiss; that you might consume it upon your lust.” Asking for our own honor and or exaltation of self, God will not answer that prayer. God will not give His glory to another.

Let us each examine ourselves.
